Leaves, Branches and Roots

I came across something the other day that really help put things in perspective, really resonated in my life and thought I’d share my take on it. People in our lives are like parts of a tree; leaves, branches and roots. I believe these metaphors hit home in so many ways and really makes you think. Are you a leaf, branch or root?
“The first type of people are like leaves on a tree. When the wind blows, they go with it. When the seasons change, they change. Like leaves they‘re beautiful in the beginning, but eventually they fall away.”
When we think of what this means, we can remember the people that were leaves in our lives. We can appreciate the lessons they brought, have gratitude for the moments that were shared, and detach from any pain they caused. Helping us to grow from it.
”The second kind of people are like a branch on a tree. You have to be careful with these, because they can often fool you. They’ll make you think they’re a good person and they’re real strong and they’re there for you, but the minute you step out on them, they’ll break and fall.”
In our own lives we know moments where we’ve been branches to others, and had branches in our lives. Often there may have been promises made but many were broken. These can be attributed to shortcomings within ourselves and of others. This allows for the opportunity to become more honest with ourselves and the people around us. We need to surround ourselves with people who contribute to our overall emotional, mental and physical well-being.
“The third type of person are those that are like roots. People who are like roots of a tree are permanent. People who go through everything, hell and back, and still stand strong as people worth keeping.”
A tree in a lifetime can have millions of leaves, hundreds of thousands of branches, but a few roots at the bottom make sure it gets everything it needs. When you get roots, hold onto them.
When you reflect on this, really think deep down who is a leaf, branch or root in your life. For me, I know who my roots are and I’m truly blessed and thankful I have them in my life everyday. As for the rest of my tree, I’ve realized that there are many people I’ve crossed paths with in my life, whether it be from my childhood, as a teenager, and as an adult. Every person that has entered and exited my life or things broke off or faded away happened for there own reasons, and that’s okay. I think accepting those things will allow for growth within ourselves.
In life, sometimes things happen that are in our control and out of our control. Sometimes things happen for reasons that we may not understand or never understand. That’s when we trust in our roots to help us get through, to keep us grounded and true to ourselves. Roots are the company worth keeping!
